  • A Taste of Sangha

    A Taste of Sangha

An interview with Mr. John Reed,
Chief Operating Officer, SANGHA Retreat by OCTAVE Institute

SANGHA Retreat by OCTAVE Institute, is the only retreat that offers personal awakening through ancient Chinese

practices and the discovery of quantum science, with a focus on raising consciousness. It was created to meet the needs of our time by visionary Fred Tsao, fourth-generation steward of a family business that started on the Shanghai Bund more than a century ago.

More than a school of life, OCTAVE Insti- tute is a platform to help people find clarity, harmony and a new level of consciousness and freedom. It consists of SANGHA Retreat, a comprehensive wellbeing resort in Suzhou, and THE LIVING ROOM, an urban support center in Shanghai. Within Sangha is The VILLAGE, a live-work-learn community for personal and communal learning, executive retreats, conferences, summits and festivals including the AT ONE International Festival, an annual festival that brings together thought leaders and holistic practitioners to address current issues. Also under the OCTAVE Institute is, AITIA, which powers the brand’s communal programs at OCTAVE Institute. Together they create the foundation for growth towards a purposeful life, mindfully lived.

Located to the west of Shanghai on the out- skirts of Suzhou, SANGHA Retreat combines Eastern philosophies backed by Western science to help people awaken to a life of greater purpose and personal wellbeing. The 47-acre retreat, designed by Tsao & McKown, includes AT ONE guest suites; the AT ONE Clinic, offering comprehensive wellness assessments and wellbeing programs; AT ONE Healing Spa with extensive spa treatment menu and hydrotherapy circuit; THOUGHT FOR FOOD restaurant; the Meditation Dome; and a seasonal schedule of fitness activities and mindfulness classes designed around the body’s circadian rhythm.

Mr. John Reed, the COO whom joined last October, brings more than 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry in the U.S., Australia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bali and Bhutan. He has worked at the helm of renowned hospitality organizations and has deep knowledge and understanding of the markets in South Asia and Indochina, especially Bhutan where he spent a significant part of his career building the AMAN brand. Born in the U.S., Reed graduated from Cornell University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management. SpaChina interviewed Mr. Reed.

What kind of guests are visiting SANGHA Retreat now? What kind of experiences do they want to have during their stay?

Right now, we are probably 99% Chinese national guests. We get a few expats who come across typically doing longer programs. By the nature of Chinese clients, it is shorter stays averaging typically about two nights right now. And what do they want? Our guests want to start a journey of wellness and wellbeing, not knowing how quite to begin, and they have taken notice of Sangha as we get ourselves out into the market. Our “A Taste of Sangha” is an entry point into Sangha to explore the possibilities of what is on offer, allowing for wellness immersion while starting a journey to wellbeing when guests’ visit.

We guide guests though different non-invasive body scans which are then reviewed with one of our doctors, with guidance on what an individual may want to address and how we can support this through our offerings. There is definitely a strong interest here.

And one of the messages that we try to strive to get across is to look beyond what is ailing you. As example, you have an aching back, what is the root cause of the ache. The ache could be kidney related or something to do with our gut management or is it truly nerve, muscle related. What we try to do, without being forceful, is to coax the guests along, inspiring interest to become a better self. We start with what are the six living habits – eating, breathing, movement, sleep, thinking and awareness, allowing guests to explore these habits through our Living Habits Calendar, a series of complimentary classes and talks exploring each habit.  Lots of people don’t want to be force-fed, and we gently encourage guests, leading them through what is available and what they can do.

What are these guests’ personal profile?

We see a broad spectrum of guests, from young couples, young families, multi-generational families, older couples and single travelers. We do like to engage guests of all ages, introducing them to a higher state of wellness and wellbeing, and guiding them along the way. We do like to engage families to allow the entire family to start a journey of wellbeing, being aware and growing together. But it goes back to the people truly wanting to commit or seeking to start a journey.

The concept of Sangha is probably five years ahead of the whole China retreat tourism experience and compares with places like SHA, Chiva-som or Kamalaya, where there is wellness culture. But Chinese are used to family-oriented travel, especially in the sum- mer vacation period. How do you see the potential of the family market in China?

The family market has tremendous potential in the wellness area. We have one building that is yet to be completed that we are working on that, that is our art & music building. We are looking at a unique gym concept for children from ages 3 up to 16, with a lot of fun stuff, but also some cool little classes where they can start to get on their own wellness journey. And then we want to add some other areas such as painting, pottery-making involving sensory and visual type of skills and creativity. In the meantime, we have some programs and family coaches who are introducing different types of arts and craft engagement. The goal is to be able to entertain and keep the children busy, which allows the parents to  come across to use the gym, spa and clinic. We can keep everybody balanced at the same time. And ideally, at the end of the day, the children are exhausted and the mum and dad can have some peace.

What we want to do in AT ONE  is to keep it more peaceful and quiet, child-free. That’s why we look to accommodate families in the service apartments and villas, and why we will build out even more, and become more robust on the side for family engagement. We are also adding of bicycles for adults and children as there is a beautiful bike route around Yangchen Lake. The government has developed lovely landscaped open areas for biking, kite flying and sports. All these things we can use to engage with children as well.

In China, parents’ spending power is number one focused on the children. What opportunities do you see for Sangha in children’s health, such as lazy eye because of a lack of connection with nature, spinal problems caused by too much homework?

We want to do as much as possible to encourage wellbeing learning from very early on, and also address some of the lifestyle issues, including nutrition. We are offering cooking classes for children, to teach healthy cooking using, as example sugar fee, all natural ingredients. We can offer spinal body alignment programs for  children. Further we plan to introduce a dental program, as true wellness starts with great dental hygiene, complimenting overall wellbeing.

What is the Sangha experience aiming to achieve?

You mentioned we were 5 years ahead of our time. Some people say 20 years ahead of our time. But I think we are right for our time. What it truly comes down to is the right pres- entation, the right messaging that goes out. There are some people who have a broad understanding and appreciation of wellbeing  issues, and there are many who do not understand the dangers of our modern lifestyles and related chronic illnesses. We need to help to guide and educate the market. It’s not just about serving our immediate guests, its Sangha’s vision to go well beyond that. We want to impact our guests who in turn impact their families, neighbors and colleagues. And when your children leave here, they talk about it to other children, and the children talk to their parents as well. Its starting the journey with the intention to reach the wider population. It’s a drop in the lake that sends that ripple to achieve an overall higher level of conscious wellbeing.

It’s all about positively affecting more people. While the bottom line and profitability are important, we want to positively impact the world through what we do. We can’t have the whole world come to Sangha, but if we can set the intention to positively impact, and create that ripple, even if it is tiny, then we have succeeded.

Do you think the pandemic change people’s lifestyle?

I would say for the majority of the world, no. There’s a lot of talk, a lot of hype, we participate in so many webinars and forums, and I see a lot of papers saying it’s changed this, it’s changed that, but now the belief is, no. The sentiment at the moment is that once we have a vaccine, life will bounce back to normal quickly for most. Even though this has gone on for several months, with lots of deaths, sadly, I think the world will move on too quickly from this and not take home as much of a mes- sage as what the virus is trying to give us.

What do you think of the health needs and the preferences of Chinese guests?

Lifestyle choices are leading to chronic illness issues such as diabetes, cancer and dementia, most of which can be prevented through correct nutrition, movement sleep and breathing, all addressed within our Living Habits Calendar. One of the most popular classes is that on nutrition, and we have a hard time getting guests away at the end of the class. But there is a gap in terms of what people know and what truly they should know for their own wellbeing. Starting with just a good balance, clean diet and ensuring they’re getting enough nutrients and minerals and everything else in their diet. There’s an opportunity and there’s   a need. But I think that’s generally a lack of awareness of the importance of dental hygiene, and more important the negative impact that poor dental care has on your body. It’s related to heart health, to your overall health. There are so many other issues that come with that.

And related to detox, we all know we don’t live in the healthiest of air, and we all know that has a tremendous impact, a long-term impact on us. We look at our children as they grow, and there is the necessity to detox and cleanse our bodies, and we can heal our bodies. We know we can heal it through lots of different modalities including diet, to quote Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food.”

Smoking is another issue for many persons and while we do have some designated outdoor areas, we otherwise keep the resort smoke free with no smoking in the guest suites and all public areas.

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I smoked myself and it’s not a good feeling. We all know it’s not good for us, however we are naturally programmed to abuse ourselves, whether it’s alcohol, tobacco or too much fat in our diet, or drugs or whatever it is, we do it.

What it goes back to is there are a lot of lifestyle issues that need to be addressed, starting with that fact that we don’t move enough. Our children don’t move enough. They are not nearly as active as they should be in moving around and playing sports, and this is leading to weight related lifestyle issues in turn potentially leading to chronic illnesses like diabetes or heart disease.  All coming full circle back to nutrition and movement. This is where we would just love to send out a good message.

  • A Story of Tradition and Modern, Present and Future

A Story of Tradition and Modern, Present and Future

An interview with Ms. Yvonne Cheung, Founder of YUSUMTONG

Yvonne Cheung founded YUSUMTONG in 2018 after 15 years of being a consultant and a supplier to the luxury spa industry. Her experience and observations resulted in her belief that one should make wellness a part of the daily routine to achieve true wellbeing.

YUSUMTONG targets urban citizens who are too busy to take care of themselves. Integrating Chinese and Western culture, traditional and modern wisdom, it provides natural, easy-to-use and traveller-friendly products that aim to improve marginal health, prevent chronic diseases and delay ageing. Yvonne earned her first degree in Psychology from Simon Fraser University and a Master degree in Marketing from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. SpaChina interviewed her.

Nearly two years have passed after you founded YUSUMTONG. Though being a young brand, it has been praised widely by the consumers. Can you share with us the achievements of YUSUMTONG during the past 2 years?

Our first product, Rosa Rugosa, was launched in September 2018. So far we have launched more than 40 SKU. By the first quarter of this year, our total GMV was about 150 million.

What do you think are the reasons for the success of YUSUMTONG? Please explain the terms of product positioning, pricing and marketing strategy.

YUSUMTONG aims to meet the health needs of the urban white-collar woman. We integrate Eastern and Western cultures and traditional and modern health concepts. We take the medicinal essence and make them part of daily diet. We have developed a range of products that address most of the sub health conditions people face today, including poor sleep quality, menstrual pain, improper respiration, hair loss, depression and more.

In the first year or so, since there were no previous data or examples to learn from, we did not rush to do marketing. On the contrary, we spent most of the time on R&D and market testing. We sold only via WeChat channel. We gathered users’ data and diligently learnt their feedback, and then adjusted our products accordingly. We are still doing this today.

Our requirements in R & D, material selection and internal testing are quite strict, so the cost is very high. Yet meanwhile, we want our products to be “affordable”, not only to white-collars of the management level, but also to young people who just entered society. We want to help them achieve long-term health; therefore, we attach great importance to the taste and using experience of the products so that consumers will be willing to use them continuously.

Has the coronavirus outbreak affected YUSUMTONG’s development plan?

In fact, we were affected by the outbreak. Our supply chain and logistics were almost suspended during a certain period of time. However, we are very optimistic about the market of the future since the pandemic has largely increased people’s awareness to health and immunity.

What has YUSUMTONG done during the coronavirus outbreak? What new products have been developed? What are the feedback from the market?

Soon after the outbreak, we launched a “Super-protection” range that includes two products: Tea Tree Hand Sanitizer and Tea Tree Antibacterial Spray. We also launched an “Anti-virus Set” for people who return to work, which include the two products above and an oil product for respiratory function enhancement and allergy alleviation. Our customers are quite satisfied with our reaction speed. All the distribution and sales channels, including those overseas, also recognize our marketing capabilities.

What are your concept and inspiration when developing products? How do they meet the needs of the market? What are the top 3 best seller this year? What kind of products will be developed in the future?

Urban women not only get a lot of stress from work, but also need to take care of the whole household. As a result, they may not suffer big diseases, but usually have different health conditions, such as menstrual pain, vigor deficiency after staying up late, cold hands and feet due to a deficiency of qi and blood, and immunity decline which make them prone to have allergy, stomachache, premature senility and grey hair, etc. Therefore, we design products that address such actual concerns of people in their daily life. At the same time, we attach much importance to the convenience and experience of using.

Rosa Rugosa (RMB 219) is our best sold star product. Organic plantation and advanced plantation techniques from Dutch is adopted at the origin of the rose. The rose blooms only in May every year. In order to preserve the quality of the essential oil, the rose must be picked with dew in the early morning. We add no sulfur or other chemicals in the drying process. The final product is a caffeine-free tea soup with pleasant color, fragrance and taste. It’s very effective in curing menstrual disorders, alleviating menstrual pain, and improving defecating. Long-term consumption will also brighten the skin and complexion.

Artemisia Argyi Moxa Therapy (RMB 189) is another best-selling product. We use saffron to enhance the efficacy of artemisia. It is a very handy option for urbanites who don’t have time to do acupuncture or moxibustion every day. It helps to stimulate blood circulation, relieve pain, dispel wind-cold, and alleviate discomfort. It can also be adopted in spa experience, as a way to show your care to the guests.

Damask Rose & Lavender Sleep Well Oil (RMB229) is the star product of YUSUMTONG’s Sleep Well range, especially designed for people who suffer poor sleep quality, who find it hard to sleep because of stress, who fail to sleep deeply or are troubled by jet lag. It is a very soothing essential oil that is perfect to be used in the welcome ritual at spas.

After studying the feedback from many customers, we launched Premium range at the end of last year, hoping to provide more delicate solutions to our customers and help them solve more sub-health problems. Anti-Pollution Respiratory Repairing Serum Oil is the star product of this range. It is designed for people who suffer rhinitis, pool respiratory functions and are prone to have allergy in spring. It is one of the best sold products during the coronavirus outbreak.

In the future, we will soon launch new products that address “Mental Wellness” and “Sleeping Wellness”. Meanwhile, products for pregnant women and new mums are also in the plan.

YUSUMTONG has entered John Bell & Croyden, why do you want to take YUSUMTONG abroad?

We have many overseas customers from Europe, U.S, Canada, Australia and Middle East. So it is for their convenience that we bring YUSUMTONG abroad. Moreover, we also hope that more people around the world can have the chance to know and use the products of YUSUMTONG.

So far, our potential distributors abroad all give very positive feedback. They especially recognize our strategy in pricing and consumer positioning, as well as our Oriental wellness concept. YUSUMTONG is still a very young brand. On one hand, we need to build a firm foundation in China. On the other hand, we keep learning the market trends and consumer needs in foreign markets so as to better meet the needs of global customers in the future.

YUSUMTONG will open its first physical store this year. Please tell us more about it. Will your products enter spas as well?

Very soon, our first physical flagship store will be opening in HKRI TaiKoo Hui, Shanghai. It’s a milestone for YUSUMTONG. In the future, we will continue to develop in the offline health industry. Retails and spas that target white-collar females are all our potential partners.

We believe that the online shopping platform which will soon be launched by SpaChina is also a great chance for cooperation. This platform breaks the traditional distribution mode and the limits of regional services, realizing a more efficient and lower-cost matching of product owners and spas. We will join SpaChina’s new online platform and launch a range of discount products and instructional videos. We will also set up a hotline to get feedback from the customers directly. We will try every means to shorten our distance with spas and the end users.

What are your suggestions to spa operators who want to do online marketing?

From my experience, it is easy to set up an online platform, but not so easy to operate it well. Our team is still young, we have tried nearly all the online marketing methods. We feel very lucky that some quite influential KOLs are willing to promote the products for us. And we have achieved good sales. Nevertheless, our initial investment is also quite heavy.

Spas have long been doing offline services. An intimate connection with guests is very crucial to spas. So I think it’s a good idea for spas to cooperate with professional online platform operators. The online platform team will help spas to do product selecting, online promotion and marketing while the spa staff only need to introduce the platform to the guests and draw more people to their products, and don’t need to bother about the operation and management of the platform. In this way, both sides are doing what they are good at.

Making Progress with a Firm Foundation

An interview with Mr. Kenneth Zhang, President of PARAMOUNT BEAUTY

Founded in 2004, PARAMOUNT BEAUTY has now developed into a comprehensive enterprise in the wellness industry that integrates distribution of international skincare products and Chinese top spine-care brands, as well as consulting and training services.

PARAMOUNT BEAUTY adopts a localized marketing approach for the international brands and offers a range of impressive products that feature remarkable and long term effects and provide support for post-surgery skins into integrative solutions to better meet the skincare needs and preferences of Chinese customers. Among all the products of PARAMOUNT BEAUTY, the most popular ones at present are those that address the spine problems of modern young people who are used to looking at mobile phones all the time. So apart from skincare, PARAMOUNT BEAUTY is also a navigator in the spine care industry.

The group now owns several international brands including Ericson Laboratoire, Phyris, Pevonia, Dita and Silery, and renowned spine care brands including CORPSON and Royal Spine. PARAMOUNT BEAUTY supplies these products and services to several thousand fiv- star hotels and high-end beauty salon and spa chains in China.

Mr. Kenneth Zhang is not only the founder and leader of PARAMOUNT BEAUTY, but also a life instructor with 15 years’ experience of giving guidance to senior trainers, and a marketing strategy consultant. He has developed a range of courses including “Reverse Thinking Marketing Mode”, “Excellent Leadership”, “Position Obligations”, “Training for Chief Operating Officer”, and “Instruction Style and Corporate Cultural Innovation”.  SpaChina interviewed Kenneth.

What was the business situation of PARAMOUNT BEAUTY during the epidemic? Has the import of international products been affected?

During the epidemic, our business with hotels completely stopped and our business with beauty salons and day spas was affected greatly as well. But there still were some spas and salons that tackled the pandemic very well and even saw sales growth. I think the reason is that they laid a firm foundation and always paid attention to their service quality.

After the coronavirus outbreak, the company’s core team immediately carried out internal standard upgrading, system upgrading and online training. I understand that many companies try hard to keep or increase their sales during the period, but I believe that it is also extremely important to take the chance to re-examine business, upgrade standards, improve systems, build the team, adjust operational modes and enhance efficiency. If we do this, we will have more confidence to face the future. No matter how the market changes, it is always a key to keep one’s own competitiveness. The epidemic will be over some day, we need to get prepared to face the new challenges that may come afterwards.

Please introduce the Xin SPA program to us.

The epidemic gives our clients a good chance and time to stop for a while and upgrade their business. Therefore we launched “Xin SPA ‘2+28’ Training Camp” both online and offline. We invite the CEO and executives from our clients to join in the camp and get inspiration on how to adjust their business strategies, organization structure, customer positioning, product structure, as well as get a clearer picture of the future market and lay a firmer foundation during this period. Then when the market is revived again, they can quickly respond to the new market requirements and run faster than their competitors.

The Xin SPA training program calls for returning to the basics of operations. We provide integrated solutions to our clients that cover business strategies, structures, product  categories, services and marketing, all around the experience of end customers. We also help them to put the solutions into practice and thus enhance their core competitiveness. The training features three levels: “Foundation” – Professional Technique Service Program; “Advancement” – Operational Executive Program, Leadership Program; “Superlative” – Strategy Design Program, CEO Study Tour Program.

Do you have any plans to help your clients restore sound business?

I can predict that in the post-epidemic time, the number of visits will decrease but guests will be more demanding on quality. They will also show more need for spa, health and wellness related programs. At present, we are assisting our clients to do standard upgrading and build the Xin SPA system. We also help them to enhance their team quality through training, practice, examination and effective management. We believe a more capable team will definitely improve their competitiveness.

The Sino-US relationship remains strained recently. As a Chinese distributor of American products, have you made any business adjustment and what is your development plan for the future?

The epidemic will probably last for just one or two years, but we should get more prepared to deal with a long term trade war. The customs duty for Pevonia, an American brand that grants us the distribution rights, was raised by 30% recently. But many Chinese customers still love to use it. Therefore, we enhance brand marketing and shorten product lines by focusing on the best-selling ranges.

The future market is dominated by customer’s feedback rather than products or advertising. So what we should do is to offer customers remarkable experiences and make them really satisfied with our products. Meanwhile, I feel it is very urgent for Chinese manufacturers to develop and upgrade our own techniques. Companies that are without their own core technology and keep copying others will surely be abandoned by the market.

Please introduce your new brand NAROGARDEN to us.

After four years’ exploration around the world with my wife, we finally introduced NAROGARDEN to China. It’s natural essential oil born from the best organic plants in the world. From the manufacturing, packaging to designing, every section and detail conforms to strict standards. Even the bottle cap is imported from Germany. NAROGARDEN now features five collections: Narogarden Felicity Collection, Narogarden Purity Collection, Narogarden Cyroextraction Collection, Narogarden Space Fragrance Collection and Single Essential Oil Collection, pampering and rejuvenating the body and mind with the power of nature.

We originally brought in NAROGARDEN in order to improve the health of our family members, friends and staff, especially to address sub-standard health conditions. We want to help people achieve a perfect balance of body and mind.

Do you have any plans for the second half of 2020 and 2021? In the second half of 2020, we will focus on developing the new membership regional market and upgrading our operation. In the next three years, we will continue to make progress based on a firm foundation.
