  • Meditation: Live Longer, Prosper More

    Meditation: Live Longer, Prosper More

On top of all its other benefits, meditation might even help you live longer.
    By Vivienne O’Keeffe

Referenced in Hindu texts from as long ago as 1077, the practice of meditation is the farthest thing from a fad. And yet there may be no better time to revisit this ancient practice than in the tumultous times of early 2022.

Scientifically speaking, we’ve got a better picture of how and why meditation works. Its many physical and mental health benefits, well-documented in some 700,000 research documents, include decreased pain, better immune function, less anxiety and depression, a heightened sense of well-being, and greater happiness and emotional self-control.

It has never been more popular. The growth in meditation apps, such as Headspace, is unprecedented at this time.

And if that’s not enough to convince you to take a fresh look, a white paper called Mental Wellness: Pathways, Evidence and Horizons by the Mental Wellness Initiative (MWI) of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), led by Professor Gerry Bodeker, and for which I was honoured to be a contributor, also trumpets the many rewards of those peaceful, calming daily sessions of meditation – and adds some valuable historical perspective.

“Meditation was a little understood spiritual development technique of both the East and West until 1970, when (the magazine) Science published the first rigorous scientific research paper showing that during meditation, oxygen consumption and heart rate decreased, skin resistance increased, and the electroencephalogram showed specific changes in certain brain frequencies,” the MWI reports.

“…Four decades of studies highlight the effects of (Transcendental Meditation) in enhancing immunity, reducing depression and anxiety, improving academic performance, reducing age-related cognitive decline, increasing happiness and quality of life, and managing and reducing trauma.”

A workplace study in 2018 showed that 52% of U.S. employers provided mindfulness or meditation training to their employees and reduced absenteeism by 85% – while boosting profits by an amount so high I won’t even mention it.

I don’t need 100-page reports to know that meditation has made my life and practice as a consultant a lot calmer and more productive. I started meditating to calm my anxieties and steady my resolve through a particularly stressful personal and professional situation in 2010, attending classes given by an instructor in the Vancouver area. The sessions improved my well being, mental focus and overall state of happiness to such an extent that I’ve been doing two 20-minute sessions a day ever since.

Meditation has made a lasting impression on many lives, including the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Ellen DeGeneres, Katy Perry and Jerry Seinfeld. David Lynch, the famed director of classic films like Blue Velvet and Eraserhead, created a charitable foundation (www.davidlynchfoundation.org) to promote it.

“I started Transcendental Meditation® in 1973,” says Lynch on the foundation’s website, “and have not missed a single meditation ever since. It has given me effortless access to unlimited reserves of energy, creativity and happiness deep within.”

One of the Lynch Foundation’s chief accomplishments is its Quiet Time program, which aims to reduce stress, enhance wellness, and improve academic performance in middle and high school students. Its simple, easily-learned technique involves students and teachers sitting together with eyes closed for two 15-minute periods every day. Highlights of the program in San Francisco-area schools include:

    • Increased grade point average (GPA) at both Quiet Time middle schools over four years
    • Improved GPA in meditators compared to a non-meditating control group
    • Reduction in the achievement gap, as measured by GPA, between African American and Asian students at Visitacion Valley Middle School
    • Improvements in daily attendance
    • A steep drop in student suspension rates from 28% to 4% after three years of the Quiet Time program at Visitacion Valley Middle School

Lynch’s program could account for the huge rise in the number of school-age American kids meditating: tenfold from 2012 to 2017.

I think the people working in our industry could be especially large beneficiaries of meditating. Pandemic-related stresses associated with declining revenues, stringent health requirements and physical isolation have taken a toxic toll on many spa owners and practitioners.

It’s an easy habit to pick up. The entry fee is minimal – a commitment to the time of about 40 minutes a day for most practitioners. You don’t need any special clothing or equipment, and while instructor-led classes are best, you can learn how to meditate from a library book or YouTube video.

Not that meditation is the sole path to nirvana-like serenity. The MWI’s white paper discusses many mental health-related factors ranging from nutrition to sleep patterns, massage, aroma, personal relationships and exposure to nature and sunlight.

But it discusses meditation at length, and identifies several types of meditation and the benefits specific to each.

“Meditation induces large scale neuroplasticity to promote higher level development in cortical areas, especially the PFC (pre-frontal cortex),” says the MWI report. “Different types of meditation practices exist… eliciting distinct neural changes and corresponding benefits. Mindfulness meditation cultivates nonjudgmental awareness, discipline, attention control, and emotional regulation. Transcendental Meditation (TM) promotes calmness, restful alertness, and heightened self-awareness. Loving-kindness and compassion meditation foster selflessness, empathy, and positive relationships.”

Adding to that, researchers at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging found that long-term meditators have larger amounts of so-called gyrification – a folding of the brain’s cortex, which may allow meditators to process information faster than people who do not meditate. A direct correlation was found between the amount of gyrification and the number of years meditation is practiced, possibly providing further proof of the brain’s neuroplasticity, or ability to adapt to environmental change.

On top of all its other benefits, meditation might even help you live longer. Evidence shows that it helps preserve the length of telomeres, those protective caps on the ends of chromosomes whose length seems to be connected to longevity (longer being better).

Nobel Laureate Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Eppel present these and other findings on the effects of lifestyle change on telomeres in their book The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer (2017). And here I quote directly from a paper produced by the American Psychological Association: “In researching mindfulness meditation (Eppel and Blackburn and colleagues) …proposed that some forms of meditation may have salutary effects on telomere length by reducing cognitive stress and stress arousal and increasing positive states of mind and hormonal factors that may promote telomere maintenance…. Subsequent research has borne out the link between meditation and telomere length, with results showing that mindfulness meditation leads to increased telomerase activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and TM meditators demonstrating increased telomerase gene expression. These studies point to the effects of meditation in slowing biological ageing.”

The MWI report qualifies mindfulness as a form of meditation, but it’s definitely not the same thing. I would describe it as a constant effort to stay in the present and live in the moment, rather than, say, dwelling on past failures, or harbouring expectations of impending doom.

Think of how you might feel on a tricky ski run, long bike ride or challenging golf hole and you’ll get a glimpse of mindfulness. Concentrating solely on an immediate, precise challenge gives the rest of your angst-ridden brain a chance to relax and recharge. There is no past or future, just the now.

The differences are well explained on the  Black Zen (www.blackzen.co) website by one of its creators, Stacey Johnson:

“While both practices (mindfulness and meditation) provide an incredible number of physical and mental health benefits, meditation touches on something bigger – your spiritual well-being. So while mindfulness creates the space in your mind for happiness and joy now, with meditation there is an opportunity for happiness and joy outside of circumstances. It is the slight difference between a state of mind and a state of being.” Whether for you or your team, practising meditation or mindfulness (preferably both) is a great way to get through a never-ending pandemic, today’s fractious political debates and a tough business climate, and start feeling more relaxed, focused and productive. If you don’t already, take my advice and start. It might be the best decision you ever make.

    Vivienne O’Keeffe

  • Flexibility with Effectivity

    Flexibility with Effectivity

Interview with Mr. Carlos Moliner, the CEO of RÖS’S Estética S.L.

Mr. Carlos Moliner founded his company in 1978, starting from a small workshop of only 40 square meters, and until 1987 the activities of the company were limited exclusively to the Spanish market. From then on and little by little, a period of expansion began into export activities. In 2008, the company moved to its current facilities in Castelldefels in Barcelona. At present, RÖS’S premises have 5,500 square meters and RÖS’S company has a presence in more than 25 countries worldwide. Mr Carlos Moliner here shares his opinions with SpaChina.

What trends do you see for the beauty industry?

In recent years, a clear trend stands out in Spain where we no longer talk only about beauty. The health factor has taken paramount importance. Today people not only give importance to their physical external appearance. A healthy lifestyle (physical exercise, healthy eating habits, etc.) has become just as important. Logically, the beauty industry, following this trend, is providing the treatments that the market demands, treatments that, in addition to producing an aesthetic benefit, must be consistent with promoting well-being and health.

What, then, are the latest trends for the wellness industry? Are there any advanced new technologies that you would point to?

Continuing in the line already discussed of well-being and health being a priority objective, the technology that has best adapted to these principles is diathermy because it allows the body’s defenses to be increased and therefore reinforces our immune capacity to fight diseases. Our Binary Premium is a very clear example of this synergy of aesthetic results and health enhancement. At a more aesthetic level, body treatments (such as obesity, flaccidity and cellulite) continue to be very important in our industry. Therefore, treatments focused on remodeling, firming and toning, such as our latest Roll Systemic, which has been presented at the last CosmoBeauty fair in Barcelona last February, are widely well accepted.

What advanced physiotherapy technology does ROS’S offer which is used for recovery solutions? What kind of treatments do you provide to reach the goal?

In the field of physiotherapy, our company has made a great contribution to this sector because we are the first company to achieve a diathermy of strong power that is also portable. At the same time, we have developed and patented a new diathermy application system through hands-free and systemic bracelets. Traditionally physiotherapy treatments are specialized in two groups: on the one hand, pain-related treatments; on the other hand, muscle and bone regeneration and recovery treatments. In Spain, we have witnessed a third treatment that each year is gaining social acceptance, recognition and importance: I am talking about pelvic floor treatments, which are increasingly in vogue. RÖS’S is very proud to be able to bring to the market a machine that helps improve the level of health and well-being of the person receiving the treatment. As a result, I am very proud to announce that RÖS’S has received the award of the Most Innovative Company (granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation) and the Best Treatment Appliance of the Year (granted by Vida Estetica at COSMOBEAUTY Barcelona 2022).

Aesthetic technology: The RÖS’S product range offers solutions for beauty salons and wellness centers. Please tell us more about this part of your business.

When we are targeting any sector, be it aesthetics or physiotherapy, Ross’s philosophy is that any treatment provided by our products must fulfil two objectives: in the medium term there has to be a noticeable improvement in the skin, texture, tissue and health, while in the short-run an immediate effect has to be visually noticeable from the very first session. Our goal is always to provide our customers with products/technology that make possible a fast return on investment. By providing profitable tools to our clients and a high level of satisfaction to their final customers, we are achieving strong customer loyalty at all levels.

During the COVID period, have there been any difficulties for the business?

Logically during the COVID period, like all companies, we have suffered a strong business and financial shock in both growth and sales. In Spain, at the beginning, nobody expected that this health issue was going to last that long. Unfortunately, we were wrong. Once the pandemic lockdown was declared (March 2020) we had to close the company for almost three months. Some of the staff were able to telework from home, but not the production workers, so the impact on manufacturing was bad since it was completely paralyzed. Logically, that the rest of the world has also been “dormant” for a while due to the pandemic, has also limited us. Luckily, after two difficult years, at current we are practically at a pre-pandemic level.

One of the things that has caught my attention the most is the ability that human beings have in times of difficulty to unite more than ever. I detected in all the employees of the company a maximum commitment and predisposition in being able to contribute in any possible way in these difficult moments. In this sense, I feel enormous pride in seeing the human quality of the people who make up the RÖS’S staff.

What do you see as the potential of the China market? What kind of service and support do you provide to your Chinese distributor or partners, to work in the China market? What is the market feedback?

Currently the Chinese market, due to the demographics – a population of 1.4 billion people – and economic factors – sustained growth rates over the last two decades and more – is beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the most important markets worldwide, if not the most. Logically for us, our market presence in China is vital, and it makes me extremely proud to be part of it. I feel truly fortunate to have found an exceptional companion who has made possible the high visibility of our brand in China. So, I must thank the great professionalism of our Chinese team. Without their excellent work, nothing of what has been achieved would have been possible.

We provide our partners with full support in marketing, training, protocols, scientific information, technical assistance, in short, our distributors know that our entire company structure and knowhow is at their disposal. In this sense, we do not consider ourselves only a company of manufactured products but as a service company.

What are your future plans for the next 5 years? To consolidate our leadership in the national market and to expand our presence and growth in the main international markets. We are currently in very advanced negotiations to enter the North American market in the second half of this year. I strongly believe that to achieve these goals, it is necessary to prioritize our R&D policy by allocating significant resources. The development of new, efficient and consolidated products is the vehicle that will make possible this growth in the years to come.
