Bangkok: boat trips and wellness stays
If you don’t want to waste your time in traffic, take a boat trip down the Chao Phraya River for a free and relaxing escape from bad traffic, and it’s also very friendly to your wallet.
Bangkok’s boat services and routes are distinguished by different coloured flags, with the orange-flagged cruise starting at Nonthaburi Pier and ending at Wat Rajsingkorn Pier being the most iconic, and costing just 15 baht.
From the starting point, the first recommended pier to get off and hang around is Si Phraya Pier (N3), a photographer’s favourite with its classic-style buildings on Charoen Krung Road. Cross the river and you’ll find Warehouse 30, a World War II-era warehouse that has been converted into an art centre, displaying and selling a wide range of handicrafts.
The Memorial Bridge Pier, also known as Saphan Phut Pier (N6), is not far from the Kudi Chin neighbourhood, where village-like tranquillity meets multicultural history. The Kudi Chin Museum presents the history and cultural heritage of the community. The Talat Phlu train station, a relic from the days of King Rama II, is no longer in use, but its unique architecture still attracts many visitors. When you’re tired of travelling, take a break at the Suriya Cafe, where you can enjoy authentic Thai coffee in a nostalgic atmosphere. The Kudi Chin neighbourhood is also home to a wide range of authentic Thai food restaurants to pamper your taste buds.
If you disembark from Tha Tien Pier (N8) and cross the road, you will come across Wat Pho Temple, one of Bangkok’s most popular tourist attractions. The temple is lined with stupas and you’ll see the world’s largest statue of the reclining Buddha. The exquisite murals and stone tablets are also a cultural heritage not to be missed. As the birthplace of Thai massage, the temple offers authentic and fairly priced traditional massage services. The Museum Siam nearby, built to preserve Thai national identity and history, is also well worth exploring.
Continue your leisurely tour at Phra Arthit Pier (N15), where the Pipit Banglamphu Museum presents the traditional way of life of the Banglamphu community through words, pictures and models. Next to the museum is the Phra Sumen Fort, a beautiful building with a distinctive hexagonal, pure white body. This one of the Bangkok’s earliest military fortresses has now been transformed into a beautiful park where you can stroll around and watch the boats travelling on the Chao Phraya River. Afterwards, go foraging on Phra Arthit Road.
As a popular tourist city, Bangkok is home to a number of five-star hotels that have blended local cultural traditions to create a number of distinctive destination activities, and are unique in their approach to wellness.
Nestled on the bank of the picturesque Chao Phraya River, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River is a family-friendly oasis in the middle of the city. Courtyards, terraces and water pavilions break down the boundaries between indoors and outdoors with lush greenery and vibrant energy. The hotel has family-friendly room facilities, special toiletries for children, a kids’ club, and mind-body healing experiences for both young and old.
Come to the hotel’s Urban Wellness Centre. The signature Thai Massage will take you through ancient Thai massage and aromatherapy, popular in the Bangkok area. There are also treatments ranging from Ayurveda and guided meditation to traditional Chinese medicine and Reiki therapy to help you regain your inner peace and calm.
The hotel has prepared a Hacker-Craft, the signature handcrafted mahogany yacht, for guests. Sip champagne on your private yacht as you take in the sights and sounds of Bangkok’s long history, including the Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. In the evening, follow the murmuring waters of the Chao Phraya River and enjoy a romantic sunset over Bangkok’s glittering nightscape.
Capella Bangkok is another riverside luxury residence. Take a cooking class or choose a private chef’s lesson at the Rim Tai Kitchen, located in an open-air pavilion overlooking the waterfalls and tropical views, while learning the art of Thai cooking.
From pottery and tie-dye classes, to traditional umbrella painting, lantern making and rice cultivation, there are opportunities to get a taste of Thai culture by experiencing customs and rituals unique to Thais right at the hotel. You can also go cycling and jogging in the Mae Rim Valley, take a yoga class or go on a nature trail under the guidance of the hotel’s experts. Finally, an authentic Thai massage is an experience that should never be missed. The Wara Cheewa Spa at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai offers a wide range of treatments and massages to infuse you with renewed energy and vitality.
Step out of the hotel for a cultural stroll.
Chiang Mai’s artistic charm is visible not only in the boutiques on the street, but also in the various arts and crafts markets. Artistic and cultured young locals often gather here to set up stalls to sell their handmade goods. Interesting cloth hats, handmade earrings, tie-dye pillows, ethnic backpacks, homemade sweets and the list goes on.
Jing Jai Market, also known as JJ Market, is the most famous of all, combining Lanna architectural style and lush greenery to give off a relaxing atmosphere. Jing Jai Market focuses on the concepts of creativity, environmental protection, organics and tradition, and sells handicrafts, clothes and shoes mostly handmade by locals, with almost no homogenised products. There are also many restaurants offering traditional Thai home cooking using local ingredients and seasonal organic produce.
The Jing Jai Gallery in the market is a dedicated art space where art exhibitions and performances are held from time to time, providing a stage for locals who love to create art, as well as allowing tourists to immerse themselves in the beautiful atmosphere of art, music and cinema.
Chiang Mai Doi Inthanon National Park, known as the rooftop of Thailand for its height, covers nearly 500 square kilometres and can be a challenge for those with limited time, but with a little advance planning, it is possible to find the best of this much-loved northern Thai forest.
With its cool climate, lush trees and flowers, the park is a natural oxygen bar. Mae Ya Waterfalls, located at the foot of the mountain not far from Highway 108, is the first stop for relaxation. Then, take in the views on the way up to Wachirathan Waterfalls, 30 kilometres away, for another feast for the eyes and the soul. A 2-hour drive will take you to the village of Mae Chaem on the other side of the mountain range. It’s an ideal overnight stop, and the next morning you will wake up to the green beauty of fresh rice fields after the rain.
At the mountain top lies Ang Ka nature trail, the gateway to the Himalayas. The whole area is misty and dreamy, with a variety of temperate native plants. The park also has an elephant camp where you can observe and learn about the habits of elephants up close.
Mae Hong Son: a mountainous landscape with natural hot springs
Mae Hong Son in northern Thailand is a beautiful place surrounded by forests and rivers, not far from Chiang Mai. It’s a place of tranquillity that’s rarely visited.
Pai, under Mae Hong Son Province, offers spectacular canyon scenery, mysterious caves, vast rice paddies, as well as unique culture and cuisine.
With its steep, straight hills and lush trees, Pai Canyon is a great place to get close to nature. Climb to the top of the canyon for a panoramic view of the canyon and Pai Town, and on a good day, a beautiful sunset. Lunch is recommended at the Strawberry garden near the canyon, where you can enjoy fresh strawberry products.
Then drive to Lod Cave. This stunning limestone cave system was formed by the scouring of a stream, and the view from the outside is visually stunning with a spectacular sea of clouds on one side and a fortress surrounded by towering rocky cliffs on the other. Enter on a bamboo raft, and you will travel through three different caves filled with beautiful stalagmites and stalactites in a variety of shapes and colours.
On your way back from Lod Cave, take a side trip to visit Su Tong Pae. This bamboo bridge over a rice paddy and a stream is the longest of its kind in Thailand. The view is especially stunning at sunrise or sunset. Stroll across the bridge and enjoy the surrounding idyllic scenery.
Nestled in the Lum Nam Pai Wildlife Sanctuary a short distance from Pai, there is a naturally occurring hot spring called Sai Ngam Hot Spring. The terraced hot spring pools are shaded by the surrounding virgin forest, creating a private and cosy environment to soak in. The water is crystal clear and at a moderate temperature. Although not too large, each pool is carefully designed with river rocks lining aside.
Back in the centre of Pai, take a stroll along the pedestrian street, which offers a wide variety of Thai street food and handicrafts. Grab a cup of freshly brewed Indian tea or a mojito cocktail at Almost Famous, an old-school drinking establishment. Make a postcard at Pai Republic and send it home. Follow the music to Jazz House or Mojo Bar, where you’ll have the chance to hear some of Northern Thailand’s top musicians.
Regarding accommodation, The Countryside Resort is a mountainous eco-resort surrounded by rice paddies overlooking the valley below, with a total of 15 eco-lodges. You can lounge in a hammock by the rice paddies or enjoy a Thai massage in a pavilion in the lush gardens.
Centrally located in the town, Pai Village Boutique Resort & Farm blends modernity with nature. Thai-style huts enjoy tropical garden or mountain views, all with private balconies. It’s called a farm resort because all the organic ingredients are sourced from a sister farm across the river. Guests staying at the resort also have free access to the farm to explore and experience country life.
Phuket: enjoy the sea breeze and spa
This jewel in the Andaman Sea is not only home to many beautiful beaches and bays, but also to a rich cultural landscape.
Start your day early in the morning with a trip to Saphan Hin, a beachfront park in the heart of the city, where you can experience the locals’ way of life, with its public gym and running track for morning exercise and one of Phuket’s most beautiful sunrise viewpoints. There is also no shortage of restaurants and cafes of all kinds near the park. Don’t forget to order a cup of local hot coffee, ko-pe, and finish off the perfect first meal in Phuket with Khanom Jeen Thai Rice Noodles, served with fresh vegetables.
Then it’s time to head to your favourite beach. The most famous, Patong, is also one of the liveliest beaches in Phuket, with 3,000 metres of fine sandy beaches offering a wealth of water sports, as well as numerous restaurants, bars, spas and shops. However, due to the large number of tourists, the water quality and sandy beaches are not ideal. Kata Beach is the smallest of the three main beaches in Phuket, with 2 bays in a W-shape. The hilltop of Kata Beach is the perfect place to enjoy the sunset and is a famous postcard view of Phuket. Karon Beach is one of the longest beaches on the island and is ideal for surfing because of the high waves.
In addition to the three main beaches, Mai Khao Beach offers the spectacle of “sea turtles laying eggs”. Every year from November to March at high tide, groups of turtles come here to dig holes where the salinity and temperature are suitable to lay their eggs. Kamala Beach, once a small, quiet fishing village, remains relatively undeveloped, so fishermen can still be seen casting their nets and living a peaceful life. Nai Thon Beach, close to the airport, is also virtually undeveloped, and is perfect for sitting in the sun by yourself.
Bang Tao Beach is Phuket’s premier resort area, home to luxury resorts such as Laguna and Banyan Tree. It is relatively less crowded with tourists and very quiet.
Within the park-like Laguna Resort at Bangtao beach, Phuket, lies the Tropical Retreat Spa by Oasis Spa. Oasis Spa Thailand is a renowned luxury spa chain in Chiangmai, Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya. Here nestled among white sand beaches and tranquil lagoons, the Oasis Tropical Retreat Spa is an elegant, private sanctuary of relaxation and restoration.
Traditional Lanna art and architecture creates a calming healing space. Its eight spacious treatment villas overlooking the lagoon include delightful private outdoor showers and Thai herbal steam rooms. A range of treatments combine traditional Thai culture with modern spa techniques for a highly specialised spa experience.
“The Voyage of Golden Lanna” massage at Oasis Spa offers an unparalleled experience that transcends the typical spa journey. This exquisite Four Hand Massage, synchronized with specially composed therapeutic music, enhances the treatment’s immersive experience. The skilled therapists perform beautifully coordinated movements reminiscent of dance, in harmony with the Lanna-style therapeutic music throughout the 90-minute treatment. This journey of imagination through sound and touch gently releases you from life’s fatigue, restoring mental balance with a “once in a lifetime” spa experience.
Phuket is also home to a number of stunning islands nearby, each with its own unique charm and character. Coral Island is one of the closer ones, just 15 minutes by speedboat from Chalong Pier. Even before arriving, launch from the speedboat for a snorkelling session to explore the underwater beauty. Once on the island, in addition to the many water sports such as kayaking and parasailing, the island’s rich flora and fauna are waiting to be explored, and a walk around the island in search of the Oriental pied hornbill is also a great experience.
About 20 kilometres southeast of Phuket lies Phi Phi Island. Phi Phi consists of Big Phi Phi, which has accommodation facilities, and Little Phi Phi, which is known for its pristine natural beauty and dive sites. It is most recommended to board a speedboat for a Phi Phi sunrise tour early in the morning to experience the serenity of the Andaman Sea. Then before the hordes of tourists arrive, spend time on the empty beaches or take a dip in the colourful coral reefs.
There are also The Racha Island, known as a diving paradise, about two hours by boat from Phuket; Phang Nga Bay, known for its unique karst landscape and water activities; as well as Koh Mai Thon, preferred by couples, offering sea fishing, sailing and dolphin watching.
Whether you seek adventure or crave tranquility, you’ll find your dream holiday in this magical land of modern cities, ancient cultures, natural wonders and relaxation.
