Summer or fire is a dynamic mystery, long light, soft, hot, and burning.

Spring sprouts mature into blossoms and berries. Fruit of the fire season.

Fire is embodied as the heart in the body. The emperor, the sovereign, the center, the void, receiving and radiating spirit from and to the Universe.

Fire is what sets humans apart from all animals. In our quest for fire, we harnessed its dynamic power to cook our food. Eating cooked food, accelerated brain development and size. Fire also gave early humans relative security to have a cozy hearth and home.

Fire in TCM is the only of the five elements to be divided into Sovereign fire which is associated with the heart, the emperor, the void.  Ready to give and receive from the universe, a connection to the eternal.  Ministerial fire is related to the pericardium or that sinewy envelope that guards and communicates with the authority of the sovereign fire of the heart.  This sinewy envelope around the heart communicates through a complex web of bio-electrical connective tissue to the whole body and all organs. But the heart (xin) is the receptacle for this communication to take place.

Summer or fire season punctuated by long light, activity, and joy. Joy is the only emotion that is pathological, meaning it causes suffering when there is a lack of joy. Joy is not some temporary stimulation like a quick laugh or a cup of tea or the shade of a tree.

With all the stimulation out there, it is essential to make time for our hearts to welcome what is pure and clear.

Real pathology is the lack of or absence of joy.  If the news is any indication for the state of the world, then there is not a lot to be joyful about. Be mindful to count blessings, not problems. Blessings up, problems down.

“The heart is a vital center. It occupies the place of the ruler. It is the sacred vessel, holy land of each being; it welcomes the spirit sent from Heaven. It contains and controls the Heaven/Earth exchange that makes us human and keeps us alive. By nature, Man’s heart is vast and free like heaven, always tempted to fill itself, it seek to become empty.”  From Rooted in Spirit: The Heart of Chinese Medicine by Father Claude Larre and Elisabeth Rochat de la Valle p. xii.

“Movement overcomes cold; stillness overcomes heat.” Lao Tzu (571–471 BC).

“We cannot transform our spirits in any way, we are just able to keep them or let them go, to allow them to express the heavenly way in us or not.”

The Sorrow of Joy

A Pathological Dialectic of Fiery Emotions

Summer, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is associated with the element of fire, symbolizing the intense expression of joy. However, this fiery emotion, while capable of bringing warmth and light, also holds the potential for destruction. Joy, therefore, is not simply positive; it contains a profound, inherent duality. An imbalance can lead to frenzied joy giving way to a state of annihilation, a unique characteristic of summer’s emotional landscape.

TCM views joy as originating from the heart. Moderate joy promotes healthy circulation and well-being. Yet, the Nei Jing (Inner Canon) cautions against excessive joy, warning that it can deplete vital energy and harm the heart, ultimately damaging the body’s essence.

Modern medicine supports this view. Intense joy triggers a dopamine surge, potentially leading to tachycardia or even “happy heart failure.” Summer’s longer days, reduced melatonin, and increased serotonin further predispose individuals to emotional hyperactivity.

Historically and culturally, frenzied joy is a recurring theme. The Dionysian rituals of ancient Greece, involving ecstatic dance and intoxication, exemplify this. Contemporary music festivals serve as a modern parallel, offering a collective space for emotional release and transcendence.

However, emotions are not static; they follow a cyclical pattern. Intense highs are inevitably followed by lows. This is reflected in TCM’s principle of “yin” following “yang.” Clinically, this is evident in bipolar disorder, where summer manic episodes often precede winter depression. Neuroscience attributes this to serotonin depletion following periods of sustained hyperactivity, leaving a sense of emptiness and weakness.

This “annihilation,” however, is not inherently negative. The Buddhist concept of karmic fire illustrates the cyclical nature of destruction and rebirth, mirroring the purifying potential of intense emotional experiences. Each emotional peak and subsequent trough represents a form of cleansing, paving the way for renewal. Rilke’s Duino Elegies aptly captures this: “Every frenzied joy kneels before its own end,” highlighting the inherent interdependence of these opposing states.

So, how do we navigate this emotional landscape, achieving balance and mastering the fiery energy of joy? TCM offers valuable insights. The Nei Jing advocates for tranquility and emptiness, suggesting a regular sleep-wake cycle in summer to regulate heart fire. Traditional remedies, like lotus seed heart tea, with its slightly bitter taste, can help to clear excess heat and promote balance.

Modern psychology contributes further, with mindfulness training enhancing emotional awareness and preventing excessive immersion in joy. Biofeedback techniques, such as heart rate variability monitoring, allow for the regulation of the autonomic nervous system, promoting better emotional control.

The heart, in TCM, is the sovereign organ, the seat of the spirit. Its clarity ensures bodily harmony; its imbalance threatens the entire system. Ultimately, emotional mastery lies not in suppressing joy, but in skillfully managing its intensity, much like a glassblower shapes molten glass. By transforming frenzied joy into enduring brilliance and allowing annihilation to yield clarity, we achieve a state of wholeness – the unity of form and spirit, the highest aspiration of TCM.

The Harmonious Way to Calm the Heart Fire

Calming heart fire is not an overnight endeavor – it requires consistent daily practice and occasional deep regulation through SPA treatments. Heart fire often stems from “lack of nourishment” and “overuse,” meaning the mind and spirit have not been properly rested, and excessive emotional stimulation has caused depletion. Therefore, the essence of wellness lies in aligning with seasonal rhythms, maintaining regular routines, eating moderately, and managing emotions, to ensure balanced qi and blood, harmony between yin and yang, and inner equilibrium.

When your body sends signals – such as a slightly red tongue tip, restless sleep, or emotional agitation – it’s a reminder that it’s time to calm the heart, nourish the body, and moisten internal dryness.

Aromatherapy to Soothe the Mind, Unblock the Meridians

SPA therapists can base their treatments on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) meridian theory, identifying individual constitution and the intensity of internal fire. Essential oils that calm and reduce heart fire – like cooling lavender, soothing Roman chamomile, stress-relieving bergamot, or refreshing peppermint – can be blended with a carrier oil and gently massaged along the Pericardium Meridian (from Tianquan to Zhongchong) and Heart Meridian (from Jiquan to Shaochong). Techniques should be smooth and flowing, with gentle, deep pressure to release stagnation and guide excess heat downward and outward.

Nourishing the Head and Face to Calm the Spirit

The head is where all the yang channels converge, and the face reflects the state of the heart. For symptoms caused by rising heart fire – such as head pressure, red eyes, and light sleep – SPA treatments can emphasize calming and nourishing the spirit. Use gentle face masks rich in nourishing ingredients (like pearl powder, lily, or biota seed), or essential oils with grounding properties such as sandalwood or frankincense. Pair these with relaxing massage techniques focusing on tension in the scalp and key acupoints like Zan Zhu (between the brows) and Jing Ming (inner corners of the eyes). Adding moxibustion at Baihui (top of the head) or light scraping along the forehead can further clear and calm the mind.

Foot Soaks to Redirect Fire,
Warm the Kidneys and Strengthen the Source

The Yongquan point on the sole is the starting point of the Kidney Meridian, much like the source of a river. SPA treatments can include foot soaks with Chinese herbal medicine. Fill a wooden basin with warm water (around 40°C) and add ingredients known for guiding heart fire downward and nourishing the kidneys – such as crushed evodia fruit, salt, or decoctions of achyranthes root and night-blooming vine. Soaking the feet allows warmth to rise through the body, while the therapist applies pressure to points like Yongquan and Taixi. This method guides heart fire downward, warms kidney water, and harmonizes the heart and kidneys – relaxing the body and paving the way for deep, restful sleep. A small cup of warm longan and red date tea afterward enhances the replenishing effect.

At-Home SPA: Simple Yet Powerful

Beyond professional treatments, a calming SPA atmosphere can also be created at home. Light a lavender or sandalwood essential oil diffuser, and play soothing, ethereal nature sounds. Add a few drops of the previously mentioned essential oils to a carrier oil, and massage acupoints like Laogong, Shenmen, and Yongquan. Or simply soak your feet in warm water with a handful of salt or a few slices of lemon to calm the mind. Sit quietly with your eyes closed and your breath regulated – this, too, brings peace to the heart and soul.

How Blood Oxygen Level Became a New Marker of Health –
and Why SPA Therapies Are Stepping In. By Paper Moon

For late-night office workers hunched over screens, the signs are all too familiar: shallow breathing, a pounding heart, trembling fingers. These aren’t just symptoms of anxiety – they may be early warnings from your bloodstream. Smartwatches often reveal an invisible threat: blood oxygen levels (SpO2) quietly dipping below 92%. At that threshold, the body’s mitochondria begin to falter, cortisol surges, skin dries and cracks, and systemic inflammation brews beneath the surface.

According to global health data, the average SpO2 among the urban population has declined 3.2% over the past decade. Meanwhile, eczema has increased 47%, and cardiac inflammation is becoming more common in younger populations. The root causes may lie in three hidden shackles of modern life.

The Shallow Breathing

In cities where the lights never dim, breathing has grown increasingly shallow. Fast-paced lifestyles and constant screen time have made deep abdominal breathing a rarity. The lungs’ lower third, rich in alveoli and capillaries, has become an oxygen desert. Post-COVID complications have added a new twist: for some, deep breathing now triggers anxiety and palpitations, further discouraging full breaths.

Night owls fare even worse. After 12 hours of nonstop work, the body slips into a “power-saving” mode. Blood oxygen dip more deeply at night, and cells down-regulate their energy output. According to The Journal of Sleep Medicine (2023), this disrupts circadian rhythms, causing SpO2 to plunge by 20% during deep sleep – a form of daily, low-level altitude sickness that can lead to fatigue, insomnia, headaches, and chronic cardiovascular strain.

For those with sleep apnea, each night brings dozens of SpO2 crashes – sometimes over 30 per hour. Over time, the cumulative effect is devastating: energy-starved cells, accelerated hippocampal shrinkage, aging heart muscle, skin flare-ups. These symptoms don’t appear in lab results – but they are the earliest signs “subhealth”. (In Chinese public health discourse, subhealth refers to a state of reduced physiological and/or psychological resilience – a condition of diminished vitality, where the body functions below optimal levels without a diagnosable disease.)

Stiff Fascia and the Sedentary Trap

Modern sedentary life leads to fascial rigidity. Connective tissues harden like cement, compressing both capillaries and the nerves that regulate breathing. Low oxygen, in turn, worsens the conditio – fibroblasts stiffen further, creating a vicious cycle that chokes microcirculation. When SpO2 falls below 90%, the heart compensates by working 15% harder, and the risk of arrhythmia triples.

For older adults with declining cardiopulmonary function, the stakes are higher. Fascia-bound tissues restrict oxygen delivery precisely when it’s most needed, triggering irregular palpitations, memory fog, skin irritation, and increased cortisol due to cellular hypoxia.

Stress tightens the diaphragm, shrinking breath volume. Involuntary breath-holding and slower respiratory rates push SpO2 toward danger levels. Cortisol rises, narrowing blood vessels and further impairing oxygen transport. The result: cold limbs, stiff muscles, increased physical discomfort – and in extreme cases, sudden cardiac events. Even teens and young adults aren’t immune. Stress-induced hypoxia is an emerging health risk.

SPA as the New Oxygen Therapy

Today’s spas are not just about indulgence – they’re becoming front-line allies in stress management and sleep recovery. Blood oxygen is emerging as a core wellness metric, equally as important as heart rate or body composition.

Dynamic SpO2 mapping now functions as a metabolic stress barometer. An SpO2 level of 95% is required to maintain dopamine synthesis. When levels fall under that threshold, dopamine production halts, decision-making falters, creativity dims, and mood stability vanishes. Because SpO2 is so sensitive to hormone balance, it can also predict nervous system resilience. Spas equipped with wearable monitors and stress-detection watches can track these trends and respond with targeted therapies.

And if a client sees their oxygen levels jump from 91% to 96% mid-session, health no longer feels abstract – it becomes tangible. They become more aware of their breathing, stress levels, and self-regulation. This real-time feedback loop is transforming spas into health-tech sanctuaries, boosting not just numbers, but also dopamine-driven creativity, serotonin-powered calm, and endorphin-rich vitality.

Sound Therapy
Tuning the Brain and Breath

When a singing bowl rests on the abdomen, its vibrations penetrate the thoracic spine, activating the respiratory ganglia. A steady four-second rhythm syncs with alpha brain waves, nudging consciousness into a meditative, neuroplastic state. Paired with the 6,000 Hz white noise of a rainstick, the brain’s amygdala – the source of anxiety alerts – is lulled into stillness. Alveoli expand under acoustic resonance.

Clients often describe it as their “bones singing.” In fact, the sound waves stir interstitial fluid, stimulate nitric oxide release, and soften capillary walls, allowing oxygen to surge into previously hypoxic tissues – like rain soaking into parched earth.

Sound therapy before massage can increase stress relief by up to 40%. The soft rustle of cactus seeds inside a rainstick delivers a micro-massage on the prefrontal cortex. Unlike background spa music, sound therapy is precision-tuned – like acupuncture for the nervous system, delivered through frequency.

Essential Oils
Breathing as Ancient Instincts

When herbal essence molecules encounter deep inhalations at the olfactory bulb, the limbic system unlocks epigenetic memories of ancestral breathing instincts. Essential oils, such as eucalyptus and rosemary, can activate the medulla’s respiratory center and stimulate bronchial dilation.

A skilled therapist can guide the breath by gently pressing below the ribs, helping the client draw in more air. Inhaling for five seconds activates the vagus nerve, signaling the adrenal glands to reduce their activity. Exhaling for eight seconds raises SpO2 measurably – and sends dopamine surging into peripheral capillaries.

Massage becomes a rhythmic duet. On the inhale, a feather-light stroke; on the exhale, a grounding press. Merkel cells under the skin awaken, and endorphins rise like a hot spring.

Link Between Micro-stimulation and the Fascia Activation

As mentioned above, chronic stress (both mental and somatic) appears along with fascial rigidity. Some tech breakthroughs used in SPAs can deliver results beyond what manual treatments alone can achieve.

For example, ICOONE BODY offers precise stimulation and gentle activation within the fascia. In trials, users saw their SpO2 jump from 91% to 96% in 10 minutes. Why? Micro-simulations amplify the elasticity of the connective tissues and expands the diaphragm’s vertical range of motion, enhancing lung capacity like a turbocharger. When targeted at stiff muscles, such as the trapezoids, they resonate with the nerve endings to break down lactic acids and knots in the tendon sheaths.

Each pulse releases space in the fascia. Each millimeter of space released in the fascia can unleash 15 new capillaries, significantly improving oxygen delivery. The sensation is often described like tiny sparkling bubbles dancing beneath the skin.

Awakening the Wisdom of the Body

True healing doesn’t preach. It whispers truths your body already knows. When fascia softens, alveoli open, and essential oils guide the breath, blood oxygen saturation becomes more than a metric – it becomes a reflection of vitality.

EFT is A Healing Method that Combines the Energy Concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Modern Psychological Understanding of Cognition and Emotions, Creating An Ancient Yet Contemporary East-meets-West Therapeutic Approach

In today’s world, mental health issues are receiving increasing attention, and people are constantly seeking more natural and accessible ways to alleviate psychological stress. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping therapy, is one such mind-body regulation method that integrates the wisdom of Eastern traditional medicine with Western psychological theory. This seemingly simple technique involves rhythmically tapping specific acupoints on the body while following guided verbal cues, effectively relieving emotional distress such as anxiety and depression. It offers a new pathway to mental and physical well-being for modern individuals.

The origins of EFT can be traced back to the 1990s, when American engineer Gary Craig developed it based on Dr. Roger Callahan’s “Thought Field Therapy” (TFT). Dr. Callahan discovered that tapping specific facial acupoints could alleviate patients’ fear symptoms, and Craig later simplified it into a more learnable and systematic method. Interestingly, the core theoretical foundation of this technique stems from ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is based on the view that the human body contains an intricate energy network — the meridian system — and when energy flow is blocked, it leads to physical or emotional discomfort. EFT builds on this concept by tapping key acupoints along the meridians to clear energy blockages and restore mind-body balance.

From a scientific perspective, EFT’s mechanism operates on multiple levels. Physiologically, tapping acupoints is believed to send calming signals to the amygdala, the brain region responsible for processing fear and stress, thereby reducing the body’s stress response. Studies show that after EFT, cortisol levels (the stress hormone) significantly decrease, and heart rate variability improves — physiological changes closely linked to relaxation. Psychologically, EFT requires users to focus on specific negative emotions or memories while repeating positive, self-accepting affirmations, such as, “Even though I feel anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself.” This process resembles the “exposure” and “cognitive restructuring” techniques in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), helping break negative thought cycles. Neuroscientific research also indicates that EFT influences brain regions associated with emotional regulation, such as the prefrontal cortex and limbic system, which may explain why emotional reactions to the same issue significantly diminish after EFT treatment.

In practical applications, EFT has demonstrated broad applicability. For individuals with anxiety disorders, regular EFT practice can notably reduce anxiety levels, sometimes even rivaling the effectiveness of traditional CBT. Those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often benefit from this method, as EFT provides a safe way to process traumatic memories without triggering overwhelming emotional reactions. Depression patients report not only improved mood but also greater self-acceptance after using EFT. Additionally, EFT has been used to manage chronic pain, improve sleep quality, and regulate appetite — issues closely tied to emotions — highlighting its unique value as a holistic mind-body intervention.

The EFT technique is remarkably simple and easy to learn. The standard process involves a few key steps: first, identify the specific emotion or issue to address; then, assess its intensity; next, gently tap designated acupoints (e.g., eyebrow, under the eye, collarbone) while repeating self-acceptance statements. The entire process typically takes just minutes and requires no special equipment, making EFT a highly accessible self-help tool. Many find that after a few practice sessions, they can master the basics and use it in daily life to manage sudden emotional fluctuations.

That said, as a relatively novel intervention, EFT still requires more rigorous scientific research to validate its long-term effects and mechanisms. Current studies, while promising, often involve small sample sizes and need methodological refinement. Moreover, though EFT is safe with minimal side effects, individuals with severe psychological conditions should use it under professional guidance or as a supplement to — and not a replacement for — traditional therapy.

From a broader perspective, the rise of EFT reflects an important trend in contemporary mental health: a growing recognition of the profound mind-body connection and a search for solutions that integrate Eastern and Western wisdom. By merging TCM’s energy concepts with modern psychology’s insights into cognition and emotion, EFT has created a healing method that is both ancient and modern. In today’s fast-paced world, this simple, natural, and holistic approach may be precisely the emotional management tool many need. As research and practice continue to deepen, EFT holds promise as a pathway to emotional freedom, helping individuals maintain inner balance and peace amid life’s challenges.

Integrating EFT Tapping Therapy with SPA Treatments

The integration of EFT with SPA services can unfold across multiple dimensions. The most straightforward approach is incorporating brief EFT sessions before or after existing massage treatments. For example, prior to an aromatherapy massage, therapists can guide clients through 5–10 minutes of acupoint tapping to help release work-related stress and induce deeper relaxation. This “emotional detox + physical relaxation” combo neither significantly extends session duration nor dramatically increases costs, yet it substantially enhances overall therapeutic outcomes. For high-end SPA resorts, specialized “emotional balance treatments” can be developed, combining 30 minutes of EFT with 60 minutes of meridian massage to form a comprehensive mind-body regimen.

Localized Presentation: To gain acceptance among Chinese consumers, localization is key. Positioning EFT as “meridian emotional conditioning” or “acupressure stress relief” aligns better with local cognitive habits — clients will naturally perceive it as a variant or extension of TCM meridian massage. Marketing should emphasize its roots in TCM meridian theory while acknowledging Western psychology’s innovative adaptation and practical case studies. Therapists can also use familiar TCM terms like “qi stagnation” to explain emotional issues, fostering greater resonance.

EFT Emotional Therapists: Professional training for SPA practitioners is critical to successful implementation. Existing massage therapists, with systematic training, can readily master basic EFT techniques. Training should cover precise acupoint location, appropriate verbal guidance, and adjusting tapping sequences based on clients’ emotional states. SPAs could introduce titles like “EFT Emotional Therapist” to signal their commitment to clients’ mental well-being.

Pricing Strategy: Position EFT as a value-added service rather than a standalone offering. For instance, augment existing massage packages by 20% to include “emotional + physical” care. For premium clients, design progressive courses (4–6 EFT sessions) to teach self-regulation techniques.

Clarifying EFT as Complementary: It’s essential to maintain appropriate boundaries in SPA settings. Clearly communicate that EFT is an adjunct relaxation method, not professional psychotherapy. Clients showing severe emotional distress should be referred to mental health specialists. Ensure a warm, private environment to avoid discomfort around emotional exposure.

This innovative service model offers multifaceted value to the SPA industry. EFT’s introduction creates competitive differentiation, boosts per-customer revenue, and elevates SPAs into sanctuaries for mental well-being. As mental health awareness grows, this fusion of emotional care and physical relaxation presents a promising avenue worth exploring.
